Thanksgiving came early for students, faculty and staff at �Թ�tv (�Թ�tv) as the school kicked off International Education Week with its annual International Thanksgiving celebration. 

There was something for everyone at the event, with more than 20 varieties of foods from various countries that were sure to tempt everyone’s palate.

�Թ�tv (�Թ�tv) development director Matthew May had arrived at a crossroads in his life when he came to the Marine Corps — or rather, the Marine Corps came to him. He was 20 years old and had just failed out of college, squandering the soccer scholarship he’d earned as a star player growing up in Chicago.

 “I was sitting on the couch watching TV, wondering, ‘What am I going to do with my life?’ when a commercial for the Marine Corps came on,” May said.

He got off the couch, went to the local recruiting station, and joined that day.

The annual celebration has grown in recent years, with engaging events and activities during the week that led up to the Saturday homecoming. Events during Grizzlyfest week included student-centered activities such as a Sneaker Ball, a registered student organization competition, a lip-sync contest, campus cook-outs, at-home Grizzly men’s and women’s soccer games and a college pep rally, just to name a few.

�Թ�tv (�Թ�tv) will host its final on-campus Preview Day for 2023, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Nov. 18.
Prospective students will hear from members of the Grizzly family about programs of study, admissions, financial aid, student housing and more. Participants will be able to tour �Թ�tv’s campus and talk to student ambassadors about their experiences at �Թ�tv. The party-like atmosphere will include food, music and fun giveaways. �Թ�tv team members will host selected breakout sessions in Spanish.

�Թ�tv’s (�Թ�tv) Arctos Anthropology Club got a view into the past with primitive-living expert, Andrew Minnick, who demonstrated tool-making technologies used during the Stone Ages and pre-contact period in the Americas.

“This event will give students the opportunity to see how these technologies work and try their hand at some of them,” said Kathryn Deeley, assistant professor of anthropology in �Թ�tv’s School of Liberal Arts. Deeley said this is the second year Minnick visited campus to demonstrate the tools and tool-making processes to participants.

�Թ�tv’s (�Թ�tv) School of Education (SOE) has been recognized as an outstanding Educational Preparation Provider by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) with the 2023 Frank Murray Leadership Recognition for Continuous Improvement.

A new space on �Թ�tv’s (�Թ�tv) campus will provide a high-tech experience for students. �Թ�tv’s School of Business (SBA) unveiled its new simulation (SIM) lab during a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week. The new lab looks like something right out of Wall Street. The space features a real-time LED stock ticker that wraps around the entire room, self-contained workstations with on-demand monitors, wireless collaboration areas, all of which can be seen by passersby through the modern, floor-to-ceiling windows.

The richness of the Hispanic/Latino culture was on display at �Թ�tv’s (�Թ�tv) Hispanic Heritage Festival, held on �Թ�tv’s campus. Sponsored by the college’s Hispanic Achievers Committed to Excellence in Results (HACER) living-learning community and the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) student group, the event kicked of a long slate of campus activities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

�Թ�tv’s (�Թ�tv) outstanding faculty and staff were honored at its annual Fall Recognition Ceremony on Sept. 21. The college recognized six faculty and two staff members for embodying its four pillars of scholarship, leadership, service and creativity.

Rahaf Barakat, an associate professor of information technology in �Թ�tv's School of Science and Technology, received the 2022-23 Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award. Recipients of this award are nominated by students.

�Թ�tv (�Թ�tv) has been ranked as the most ethnically diverse Southern regional college, for 10 consecutive years according to the 2024 U.S. News & World Report (USN&WR) magazine college and university rankings, released yesterday. The Southern region includes 12 states and Puerto Rico.

The same report indicated that �Թ�tv ranks #4 in ethnic diversity among regional colleges in the nation.

The ranking was based on data reported from the college’s fall 2022 semester. With 11,030 students, the ethnic composition of �Թ�tv’s student body was 32% Black/African American, 27%
